Service Light Reset: How to do it?

In this article, we’ll delve into how to do a service light reset for vehicles where there is a manual process to this action. We’ll guide you on what it is and how it’s done for common car models here in Australia.

So you’ve done the service maintenance on your car all by yourself. You’re so proud, happy that you’ve accomplished this task and you’re also happy you saved hundreds of dollars in labour cost. But your service indicator light is still on? How do you reset this?

What is a service light reset?

Your service lights serve one important purpose: to tell you that your car needs servicing in the next so many KM as set by the manufacturer. That is plenty of time to prepare for the next car service by your friendly, neighbourhood mechanic or by you (aka Do-It-Yourself). After servicing, the service light needs to begin the countdown again for the next round of car maintenance.

By doing regular car servicing, you not only save money on unplanned car repairs and parts replacement. You also preserve a high resale value for your car, increase fuel economy, and will keep you and your passengers safe from unwanted breakdowns that can cause loss of time and a cost to get the car back to where it needs to go if you need to tow it. It is a short-term cost for a long-term benefit.

Can you reset all cars manually? Or do I need some tools?

On most cars, you just need to follow the car’s manual or read articles such as this, and you can do the reset in no time. There are times, though, that you will need some OBD tools to do it.

But first, check if your vehicle is OBD1 or OBD2. Once you’ve determined this, you will need a scan tool to do the entire process.

In simple terms, a scan tool or diagnostic tool determines faults in your vehicle and helps you clear them if needed. You can purchase the basic or full system scan tool as both can do the service light reset. Your choice may just come down eventually to how in-depth you need to check your car’s system.
